April 28, 2024 Meeting Review

The Saskatoon MQG gathered on April 28 for a sew day at Home Inn & Suites in Stonebridge. We started with the icebreaker asking if we incorporated buttons into projects. The list was long and inspiring for someone (ie. me) who loves buttons. Ideas included to add them to ties on a quilt, a fidget quilt, wall hangings – like snowmen eyes, decorations on bags, decorations on heart-to-heart quilt, on a Christmas tree skirt, my quilted heart, hand embroidery, button ball, apron, pin cushions, on a pillow to hide poorly joined seams, and button flowers on wires. I never had heard of https://www.ifoundaquiltedheart.com/. The idea is to create and place small quilted hearts in a public place, so we can brighten the day of a stranger. What a great way to use up scraps! I can’t wait to make one.

Next, the ugly fabric projects were revealed and shared with the owner of the fabric. This was so fun. Thanks Laura for bringing the idea! Over and over again we had no idea which fabric was the ugly one. To be fair to the fabric, sometimes it was just that we couldn’t seem to get it into a project as it was never the right colour. It felt like spring because so many of the projects were so colourful as shown below.

Our education topic was to help a few of us that were stuck on projects. I am inspired on mine now! We drew box tops and have until September to make our own projects to keep. We are only allowed to use the colours on the box. We can’t add, or take away colours, and can make whatever we want. The app “A quilty solid” can help with the colours. Just take a photo and it will list them.

Here are few projects shown in show and tell, some of which were works in progress. The birds are a Sue Spargo pattern and the one to the right is a Peace Makers Calendar quilt.

Next month we will have our meeting on May 26 at Home Inn & Suites.

April 2024 Meeting

The next meeting is April 28, 2024.

Our April event includes both a Sew Day and Regular Meeting at Home Inn and Suites (253 Willis Crescent). Come and Go from 9 am to 8 pm (free for members) with a Lunch Break at 12 pm and Meeting from 2 to 4 pm.

Please RSVP for the sew day via smbirnie@gmail.com. Members that are only able to attend the meeting should arrive by 2 p.m. Try to remember to bring your name tags! We encourage our members to wear their own stitched name tags.

We are revealing the Ugly Fabric Challenge. We can’t wait to see what creations have been made. Also for the meeting, those interested are to bring a box front from really anything for the Box Challenge. It could be tooth paste, a food box, or from a gadget you have purchased. The box fronts will be put into a bag and those participating (of course this is always optional) will do a draw. Then they are to make a quilt (any size, any shape, any style) using ALL the colors on the box front and not adding any extras. We can debate at the meeting as to whether the reveal should be in June or the Fall or at both times! Finally, the Scrappy Word Challenge is also ongoing. For this, you have until November to say something with a quilted project… a word for this year, a phrase of a song, a line of a poem, a quote, a name, etc.

Note that everyone is invited to participate in the Education topic this month. We are delaying the bindings until a later date. BRING a UFO (unfinished object) or WIP (work in progress) or just something that has been on your mind or sitting on the back burner for awhile.  Perhaps by digging it out and sharing with others a new spark of excitement, creativity, and inspiration will ignite! If something about the process has you stuck or stumped, this is the group to share with – there are so many creative, helpful people in this group!

Meeting Agenda

  • Icebreaker – Have you ever incorporated buttons into a quilted project? If yes, what was the project? Perhaps you can bring it?
  • Education – Show us a UFO or WIP (see above)
  • Show & Tell and Book, Blog, or Bolt
